L&S MAJORS

Is graduate school your goal? If it is - or even if it might be - it's not too early to plan how you're going to get there.

Theater, Dance and Performance Studies

Theater, Dance, and Performance Studies at UC Berkeley is designed as an innovative cross-disciplinary program which engages faculty from various disciplines as well as the larger arts community in its instructional programs. The undergraduate major and minor programs in theater, dance, and performance studies are based on the study of literature, performance, history, and culture. Students are also trained in the fundamentals of acting, contemporary dance and choreography, directing, and design, and are encouraged to pursue their particular interests in the disciplines of theatrical performance, dramatic literature, history, criticism, and technical production. The department administers outreach and production programs as well as the undergraduate majors and minors programs, offering a rich education that combines theater studies with laboratory experience. We recommend that students declare the major early, generally after completing one of the required practicum courses (10, 40A, 40B, 60) and one of the required performance studies courses (25AC, 52AC, 26)

The Department of Theater, Dance, and Performance Studies prepares you to contribute to the world as artists and thinkers. You will refine your skills as a dancer, actor, director, choreographer, playwright, lighting designer, costume designer, set designer, and/or stage manager, as well as, become articulate in explaining about how your performance profession has worked in the past and how it might work anew in the future. All classes and productions each year are open to all students. Come see a show, and if you think you can't afford to, come usher and see the show for free. My door is always open from 1-4 PM daily if you want to find out more about how easy it is to become a minor or a major, or how you can become involved in the productions and classes as your schedule allows.
