L&S MAJORS

The Department of Spanish and Portuguese fosters the development of an understanding and appreciation of the language and literature of the Hispanic world through a thorough grounding in historical/chronological developments and training in the application of various critical methods of commentary. The majors offered in the department are of particular interest to: students desiring a general education focused on the literature and languages of the area; students planning to teach language or social studies; students preparing for graduate work in literature, linguistics/philology; and students planning to enter business, government or international agency service, law, or other fields requiring a general background in the humanities.

Lower Division Requirements for the Spanish and Portuguese Majors

Option A (Spanish and Spanish American)

• Spanish 1, 2, 3, 4, 25, or equivalents

Option B (Luso-Brazilian)

• Portuguese 11 and 12 or 101 and 102, or equivalents

Option C (Plan 1: Iberian; Plan 2: Latin American)

• Spanish 1, 2, 3, 4, 25, or equivalents

Option D (Hispanic Languages and Bilingual Issues)

• Spanish 1, 2, 3, 4, 25, or equivalents
