About Social Sciences

You could hardly predict what people do, or how they do it, by knowing that they are "social scientists" - that is, members of a department in the Division of Social Sciences. This is the largest division within the University. It also is the most heterogeneous: in multiplicity of concentrations, in diversity of theoretical approaches, in methodologies for generating evidence, and in epistemologies for deciding what constitutes appropriate evidence to justify a claim. The majors in this division are:

African American Studies
Anthropology
Asian American
Chicano Studies
Economics #
Environmental Economics
Ethnic Studies
Gender & Women's Studies
Geography
History
Linguistics
Native American
Political Science
Psychology #
Social Welfare #
Sociology

Collectively, these majors address almost any question imaginable about societies, past and present. Their foci span the globe and the length of history, while also offering intensive study of the internal U.S. scene.
