Operations Research and Management

Operations Research and Management (ORMS) is an impacted ("capped") major. Due to very high demand, special restrictions on declaration of the major are in effect. Transfer students must apply during their first semester. Non-transfer students must apply prior to exceeding 80 units of post-high school coursework. See the department website for details.

The ORMS major is designed to prepare students for technical careers in production or service industries. It provides a strong foundation for those headed for engineering management positions or for those intending to go on to specialized graduate study in operations research, industrial engineering, or business administration.
Areas of concentration are:

  1. Decision Making in Economic Systems
  2. Decision Making in Industrial and Service Systems
  3. Decision Making in Societal Systems
  4. Algorithmic Decision making

Lower Division Requirements and Prerequisites for the Operations Research and Management Science Major

  • Economics 1* or 2* or 3*
  • Math 1A*, 1B*, 53*, 54*
  • Engineering 7
  • Business Administration 10*

Note: A minimum of 3.20 GPA is required for the following courses: Economics 1 or 2 or 3, Math 53 and 54, and Business Administration 10. Declaration limits are in place for this major - declaration is on a space-available basis only.
