Music
Musical training at a university includes the performance, theory, and history of music. It may serve as pre-professional training for the student seeking a career in music or it may provide a lasting source of enrichment for the student with other career goals. The music program at Berkeley provides the student with a solid grounding in practical skills, continued development as a performer through individual instruction and group performance, and a comprehensive background in the history and literature of music. At Berkeley, in contrast to a conservatory, music students receive a bachelor of arts degree with a major in music, thus enjoying the opportunity to participate in other humanities, science, and professional classes at a major research institution while pursuing their musical training.
Lower Division Requirements and Prerequisites for the Music Major
- Music 49A, 49B, 49C
- Music 50, 51
- Music 60, 61
- Music 74, 75, 76, 77
Note: Students who plan to major in music must take the music placement examination to determine placement in the appropriate level of musicianship and harmony courses. Prospective majors are encouraged to begin the music program early, preferably in their freshman year.
