Minors
Students in L&S who have a strong interest in an area of study outside their major often decide to complete a minor program. The College has designated certain programs as official L&S minors, which are noted officially on the transcript in the memoranda section.
Policies Governing Minors for L&S Students
- Courses: A minimum of five upper division courses is required, each to be completed on a letter-graded basis. At least three of the five upper division courses must be completed at Berkeley. No more than one of the five courses for your L&S minor may be included in your major program. L&S students undertaking minors offered by other schools or colleges must complete at least four courses (lower or upper division) not used to satisfy requirements in an L&S major or minor.
- Grade-point average: A minimum overall grade-point average of 2.0 is required for courses in the minor.
- Units: Requests for excess units on the basis of completion of a minor will not be considered. Work for the minor must be completed within the usual unit limits for single or double majors.
Confirming a Minor Offered by L&S
After finishing a minor, submit a Completion of L&S Minor and one (or more, if needed) Major/Minor Overlap Check forms (second page of the Completion of L&S Minor form), signed by your major adviser(s), to the minor-granting department.
Your minor advisor will check for overlapping courses between your major(s) and other minors on your record and will notify the Registrar of the completed minor. Minors are noted on the transcript in the memoranda section but are not included on the diploma.
For minors offered by other colleges or schools, please check with the offering department.
