Middle Eastern Studies

The interdisciplinary major in Middle Eastern Studies is designed to allow students to pursue a broad and balanced course of study that will give them a basic familiarity with the culture and history of the region; its basic geographic, demographic, and ethnographic characteristics; the course of recent political, economic, social, and cultural change; and at least one of the Middle Eastern languages of today.

Lower Division Requirements and Prerequisites for the Middle Eastern Studies Major

(prerequisites indicated by asterisks)

  • Near Eastern Studies 10*, or Middle Eastern Studies 10*, or History 12*
  • two years of a Middle Eastern language: Arabic, Hebrew, Persian, or Turkish (At least one semester of the language requirement must be completed or in progress before admission to the major.*)

Note: prerequisites may be in progress at time of declaration.
