Mathematics

Mathematics is the science of pattern and form. From its earliest roots in the study of numbers and space, it has grown to become the general language and tool of all precise sciences. The Department of Mathematics offers two undergraduate programs leading to a B.A. degree: the major in mathematics and the major in applied mathematics. Both majors give the student a strong, well-rounded mathematical background and provide excellent preparation for graduate study in mathematics, statistics, computer science, or operations research as well as the professional study of law, medicine, business, or education. They also prepare students for a wide range of careers in industry and government. The courses required for the majors emphasize theoretical material. The major in applied mathematics includes a cluster of courses in an area where mathematics is applied, such as numerical analysis, computer science, operations research, decision theory, economics, classical mechanics, fluid mechanics, quantum mechanics, geophysics, or biophysics.

The mathematics department offers many introductory courses, designed to accommodate students' different levels of preparation and programmatic goals. Mathematics 32 (Precalculus) is designed for students with three years of high school mathematics. Mathematics 1A-1B (calculus) is designed for students majoring or planning to major in math, engineering, or the physical sciences. Mathematics 16A-16B (calculus) is designed for students in the life or social sciences who do not intend to take further mathematics courses. The department offers honors sequences in 53-54.

Lower Division Requirements for the Mathematics and Applied Mathematics Majors

  • Mathematics 1A-1B, 53, 54
  • Mathematics 55 (for continuing students declaring Spring 2009 or thereafter and transfer students declaring Fall 2010 or thereafter)

Note: Mathematics 1A and 1B must be completed with average grades of C. Mathematics 53 and 54 must be completed with minimum grades of C in each.
