Latin American Studies

Latin American Studies is an interdisciplinary major that focuses on the history, culture, literature, and environment of Latin America, offering a broader perspective than is usually available through a departmental major. Spanish and Portuguese are required for the major, with an intermediate level of proficiency required in one of these languages and an elementary level required in the second.

Lower Division Requirements and Prerequisites for the Latin American Studies Major

(prerequisites indicated by asterisks)

  • Latin American Studies 10* (minimum grade of C required)
  • Demonstrated proficiency in Spanish or Portuguese equivalent to four college-level semesters
  • History 8A* or 8B*
