The Department of Geography provides a broad-ranging perspective on the human transformation of the face of the earth. The search for such understanding involves a thorough study of (a) interlocking systems of the natural environment (climate, landforms, oceans, biota); (b) the social use (and abuse) of natural resources; (c) the spatial organization of human activity; and (d) areas of the earth's surface at various scales: cities, regions, nations, states, or landscapes where integrated interpretation of cultural, economic, and political processes can be attempted. Most students come to major in Geography this way: They take a class or two to satisfy breadth or AC requirements and think, "Wow, I really like this stuff—this is what I want to major in." So be proactive! Take a Geography course on global warming, urban landscapes, globalization, or Africa or Central America, and see if this is the major for you. And yes, you can use your degree to get a job! Come talk to me about it. Carol Page, |
