The major in English is designed to introduce students to the variety of literatures in English, to create an awareness of theories and methods informing literary analysis, and to provide continued training in both expository and creative writing.

Lower Division Requirements and Prerequisites for the English Major

English 1A*-1B* (or the equivalent)
English 45A or 45B*
one of the following: 45A, 45B, 45C, one course in Shakespeare*
