L&S MAJORS |

East Asian Languages and Cultures includes the language and literature of China, Japan, Korea, Tibet, and other East Asian cultural regions. The department offers thorough training in the classical and modern languages of Eastern Asia (Chinese and Japanese). A student selects one of these areas of emphasis for the major. In all cases students proceed from initial acquisition of a facility in the spoken language to a reading knowledge of both modern and classical forms. Individual upper-division courses stress the philological, linguistic, or literary study of oriental cultures, and students are encouraged to select courses that will provide them an insight into each of these disciplines. The department also emphasizes the study of a particular Asian culture in its broader geographical context.
