Comparative Literature

Comparative Literature encompasses a wide range of concerns about literature, including the relationship between literatures within national, historical, theoretical, and thematic contexts, as well as the relationship between literature and other disciplines (philosophy, politics, art, etc.). The major requires a high level of linguistic aptitude; students are expected to familiarize themselves with literature in at least one national tradition outside of English in the original language.

Lower Division Requirements for the Comparative Literature Major

  • Sufficient work in at least one foreign language to qualify for admission to upper division literature courses in that language.
  • Completion of the L&S reading and composition requirement.

Recommended: Two literature courses

Note: There are no prerequisites to declaring the Comparative Literature major.
