Comparative Literature

Comparative Literature offers students the opportunity to compare two or more literatures, each studied in its original language. The field is designed to transcend national boundaries and provincial concerns, and provides broad historical, thematic, formal and theoretical approaches to literary studies. The major requires four groups of courses: four upper division courses in one literature; two upper division courses in a second literature; a series of comparative courses (introductory, historical, and the senior comparison of authors); and one course in Classics, either in translation or in the original.

Lower Division Requirements for the Comparative Literature Major

  • Sufficient work in at least one foreign language to qualify for admission to upper division literature courses in that language.
  • Completion of the L&S reading and composition requirement.

Recommended: Two literature courses

Note: There are no prerequisites to declaring the Comparative Literature major.
