Classics
Classics, the study of the languages and civilizations of Ancient Greece and Rome, embraces a wide range of subjects and disciplines. Central to the field is the study of the two languages of classical antiquity, ancient Greek and Latin, and of the rich and influential literature written in them, including masterpieces in epic, tragedy, comedy, history, philosophy, and oratory. From this center, Classics extends to the history of the ancient world, its political and social institutions, Greek and Roman philosophy, religion, mythology, athletics, and archaeology (including a study of topography and monuments of ancient art).
The department offers four major programs: Classical Civilizations, Greek, Latin, and Classical Languages.
