Chicano Studies

Chicano Studies examines the historical and contemporary experiences of people of Mexican descent in American society and institutions. Because of continuous immigration from Mexico, the field includes the study of particular aspects of Mexican history, culture and politics as they affect the Chicano community. The major in Chicano studies encourages students to develop a broad knowledge of the Chicano experience by stressing the interrelationships in the historical background, cultural patterns and artistic expression of Chicanos. To this end, the major incorporates the study of many disciplines, including political science, sociology, anthropology, history, literary criticism, and art.
