Celtic Studies

The major in Celtic Studies is designed to give students both a broad understanding of the place of Celtic languages and cultures in the world and a firm grounding in one or more of the Celtic languages. In addition to at least four semesters of language study in Irish or Welsh and the other major requirements, students will be required to organize their studies with reference to one other methodological or disciplinary area chosen from: Anthropology, History of Art, Comparative Literature, Linguistics, History, Medieval Studies, Rhetoric, Scandinavian, or another language and literature. Many students combine their interest in Celtic Studies with a double major in either a related major, or focus on acquiring a minor in Celtic Studies by taking the six required courses.

Lower Division Requirements for the Celtic Studies Major

  • Celtic Studies 70
  • Two semester courses from the following Celtic Studies courses: 15 and 85 (Irish) or 16 and 86 (Welsh), or the equivalent.

Note: Students with prior knowledge of a Celtic language may apply for credit by examination.
