Astronomy
The Department of Astronomy offers undergraduate majors in astrophysics. The astrophysics major may encompass study in a wide variety of fields, including theoretical and observational astrophysics; infrared, X-ray and radio astronomy; galactic structure and dynamics of stellar systems; high energy astrophysics and cosmology; and spectroscopy. During the first two undergraduate years, students pursue studies that will prepare them for future work in astronomy. The last two years, leading to the B.A. degree in astrophysics, are spent in more intensive work, primarily in the fields of astronomy, mathematics, and physics. The broad structure major is less rigorous than the astrophysics major and is designed for students who wish to pursue educational, technical, or journalistic occupations.
Lower Division Prerequisites for the Astrophysics Major
- Astronomy 7A-7B (Physics 7B may be taken concurrently with Astronomy 7A)
- Mathematics 1A-1B, 53, 54
- Physics 7A-7B-7C
Recommended: A reading knowledge of French, German, Japanese, or Russian
