Asian American Studies

Asian American Studies focuses on the Asian American cultural and historical experience in the United States, covering the evolution of social, political and economic institutions of Asian American communities and their relationship to the larger American society. The Asian American Studies program offers a unified and comprehensive curriculum that seeks to make at least three major contributions. First, it prepares students for positions of service and leadership in the Asian American communities. Second, the program explores the hitherto neglected aspects of the cultural, political and historical experiences of Asians in America. Third, the program broadens the curriculum at Berkeley to include instruction that reflects the conditions of Asians and other Third World people living in America.
