African American Studies

African American Studies explores the many dimensions of African and African American life, past and present. It trains students in skills that will help them gain control over information and perspectives disseminated about African and African American cultures and their peoples. The African American Studies program was established at the University in 1970, as the result of a long struggle by black students and faculty who believed African American studies needed to be an essential part of higher education in America. The department has offered the B.A. degree since 1973 and has hosted some of the most distinguished scholars and artists in America.
